Daniel chandlers conventions of context
the genre of my film will be a drama because I will be basing this short film in real life and time and also using suitable actors which will demonstrate it is a drama genre and will complete the narrative. Also my settings will be very naturalistic. this will be shown by the scenes will be filmed in real and natural places like a school classroom and real road and town. Daniel chandlers conventions of content can be applied to my film because a convention of the genre drama is natural lighting. another convention of drama is that it portrays real life situations which is demonstrated in my short film. another convention of the genre drama is portrays character development. this will be demonstrated in my film because my film portrays the journey of a boy that struggles with mental health and towards the end of the short film it shows him wanting to change and fight his anxiety and therefore demonstrating character development. another convention of the drama genre is to 'move' the audience emotionally. this will occur in my short film because my short film will have the audience response of sadness and sympathy for the main character. Also the audience will be able to relate to the main character because of the common struggle with mental health.
Narrative techniques
my short film 'baggage' will follow a linear narrative because there is no flashbacks and the timeline is in chronological order. my short film will also comply with classical Hollywood narrative because the short film will start with the boy waking up to start the day by getting ready for school, the middle of the short film will be the boy facing common problems that are worsened by his mental health, then finally the ending of my short film will be the boy starting counselling and finally getting help with his mental health and him trying to overcome his anxiety. my short film will follow a restricted narrative viewpoint to help the audience relate to the main character and his troubles and if the audience was exposed to more information than the main character they would possibly struggle with understanding the main character and also struggle to feel sympathy for him.
Blumer and Katz uses and gratifications theory
spectators will not watch my film for entertainment and diversion because my short film displays real life problems and struggles which will likely not provide diversion from the spectators real life. the spectators also will not be immersed in the film world because my short film portrays the real world. spectators may watch my film for information and education because the spectators can gain information on mental health and anxiety and how hard it can be to cope and also how to help people with mental health. this will be done by the main character highlighting how simple situations can be very hard through a monologue and also what can help distract him from feeling depressed and stressed. spectators also may watch my short film for personal relationships because the audience can feel sympathy for the main character and the struggles he deals with. they also may develop a bond throughout the short film because they see more of the struggles he goes through and the audience sees them in detail. spectators also may watch my short film for personal identification because spectators may relate to the main character and his emotions and feelings because many people struggle with mental health so therefore the main character could possibly be more relatable.
characters and character expression
the main character in my short film is a sixteen year old boy who suffers from mental health and his name is Joe. Joes friends in the sport scene have a few lines but they are not significant or important to the narrative in any way. there are no other significant characters in my short film because I want to retain the audiences focus onto the main character and his struggles throughout the film. character expression is key in my short film because the main characters feelings and emotions will be displayed through his character expression as well as the bin bag which visually displays his problems and struggles.
setting
in my short film I will have natural settings because I am aiming for a realistic aesthetic and it will help portray the reality this short film is displaying. I am aiming for natural setting because it conforms to the natural convention of the drama genre. one scene will be set in a bedroom which will allow the audience to be introduced to the character and the idea of how the bin bag represents his mental health and his problems. another setting which I will be using is a pathway which leads to the school. this is used for a quiet scene to allow a monologue to be played which will allow the audience to gain a further understanding of his feelings. another setting i will be using in my short film is a park. this will be used in the scene where Joe plays football and forgets his problems for a short amount of time.
lighting techniques
I am going to try to keep the lighting natural because it will help to maintain the realistic aesthetic of my short film and I do not want un realistic lighting because that may change the overall feel of the short film for the spectator.
sound techniques
I am going to try to keep the sound as natural to maintain the realistic feel of the short film. i will not add much non diegetic sound in post editing but I may add a sound track on some scenes where dialogue is not key or there is no dialogue at all. background sound track may complete the some scenes or add to the overall feeling of the scene and may retain the audiences focus.
editing techniques
I will be using a cut away in editing throughout the short film because in many scenes I will use a cut away to the bin bag which holds his emotions to show the increase in size and what has been added to the bag. I will also be using the cutting on action technique in the football scene when the main character kicks the ball. I will be also using a jump cut in the getting ready for school scene to show the sense of urgency in the scene.
research I have done into existing short films
I have researched short films created by students and companies. in other posts I have analysed short films. for example I analysed a big production short film 'anxiety'. this has effected my decisions on my short film because I have decided to keep the short film as natural as I can to complete the realistic aesthetic of the film because in 'anxiety' they displayed a natural look and it helped my as a spectator not only feel sympathy for the character but also relate to the character as the film reflects real life. I also researched the short film 'roadside'. the lack of non diegetic sound really assisted the narrative and also made the short film realistic which was really effective because of the lack of non diegetic sound. this has effected my decisions for my short film because I am going to try to not use much non diegetic sound in my short film to create the same realistic feel like in 'roadside'.
inspiration
I have taken inspiration from a lot of short films, the short film that inspired me the most is a big production short film called 'anxiety'. this short film is about a girl who suffers with anxiety and she tries to over come it. this was very inspiring for me because I liked the way she displayed mental health through the art of film and also the way they filmed it. The way they filmed it was very inspiring because they focused on the character on her own not multiple actors which inspired me to focus mainly on just the main character to really keep the audiences focus on the main character. also I have taken inspiration from the short film 'arrival' because their use of a inner monologue was really effective and I would like to use a inner monologue in my short film and use it to provide further knowledge for the audience effectively.
what I want to avoid
the major thing I want to avoid is the audience response of confusion because I am aiming for my narrative to be easy to follow and most of all clear. I also want to avoid any comedic conventions because I want my short film to follow the conventions of the drama genre and the film to be taken seriously as it displays a serious issue. also I would like to avoid any unrealistic aspects of my short film because that will not help the audience to relate to the characters in the short film.
how is my work going to be creative and original
my work is going to be original because I have researched and no films have the same concept or idea as my short film and also it is going to be creative because I have added a new way of displaying a issue which no one has done before. my short film will also be creative because my narrative is different to other short films and I will also be using a range of cinematography techniques and also a array of editing techniques. I will be using classic settings like a classroom however they will only assist the narrative and in no way dominate the scene or take away from the narrative.
